About Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

We are scientists, explorers and stewards of the ocean. Driven by research, education and excitement we work to create a better environment for ourselves and our children. The answers are in the ocean. Together, we will find them. We are an independent marine research institution comprised of world-class marine scientists committed to the belief that the conservation and sustainable use of our oceans begins with research and education. From our humble beginnings in a tiny shed in a small Florida town, our efforts have expanded to include: Sarasota - 10.5-acre Base Campus and Aquarium Sarasota - Aquaculture Campus Key West - Field Station and Public Exhibit Summerland Key - Field Station Boca Grande - Outreach Office Originally focused on sharks, our research has expanded to include studies of human cancer using marine models, the effects of man-made and natural toxins on humans and on the environment, the health of wild fisheries, developing sustainable and successful fish restocking techniques and food production technologies and the development of ocean technology to help us better understand the health of the environment. Our research programs also focus on understanding the population dynamics of manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and coral reefs and on conservation and restoration efforts related to these species and ecosystems. The ocean is our passion. And science is our catalyst to help our oceans heal, thrive and continue to be havens of sustainable life, life-improving science and life-giving solutions. Every breath connects us to the world ocean — and to each other. We share a responsibility to conserve and sustain marine resources, habitats and our ocean’s biodiversity. At Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, we empower the youngest inhabitants of our blue planet to embrace that responsibility. Only through exposure, hands-on experiences, and education can people truly understand the impact of marine research and science. That’s why Mote is embarking on an ambitious campaign, Oceans for All: Improving Access to Marine Science & Technology. Our mission is to construct a new Science Education Aquarium, which will grow and diversify world-changing marine research and informal science education. Our vision is to build a new, state-of-the-art Mote Science Education Aquarium in the rapidly growing community around Nathan Benderson Park within mainland Sarasota County, moving our public Aquarium off City Island. The spectacular new facility will embody our vision of Oceans for All, doubling the number of visitors whose lives are enriched by marine science each year, and providing no-cost opportunities for schools to utilize specialized teaching labs to ensure that every child has the opportunity for hands-on marine science and technology experiences.
